Toddler Portrait

Keith took this picture a few weeks ago, when we were visiting a friend's house. Doesn't it look like a posed portrait? I think it's something about the light and the focus.

We've never actually had her picture taken professionally. I think that was part of the point of splurging on a really good camera before she was born. I like all of the candid shots; I think they capture her personality better than a studio session would.

Other parents: Am I going to regret this later? Should we be getting professional pictures too?

I'm not a parent, but I was a kid once. I don't think my parents had any professional shots taken of me when I was a baby/toddler. My aunt had a professional camera and photography hobbyist, so she did posed shots and candids instead. We did some studios when there were more of us kids, and to be honest, I like the shots from my aunt better. They're more special and a lovely reminder of her now that she's gone.

Bonus: You don't have to worry about getting Eleanor dressed and ready to be on time for the appointment only to have her be in a bad mood when you get there.

Cat: You raise a good point. I shouldn't just limit the discussion to parents, because there's ALWAYS the possibility of Eleanor blaming us later. So a "kid's" perspective is good to know, too! I'm glad to hear that, as the child, you felt the same way about posed vs. informal pictures that I do as a parent.

I will be sure to pass your compliments on the picture onto the photographer:)

I love the background in this photo! :) Hehe. It is funny, most professional photographers are doing strictly candid photography. If you do get some professional pictures done, I highly recommend the candid kind (versus the Picture People/Sears/Etc. kind). As I'm sure you noticed, with one person in the family always taking the pictures, there are very few of all of you. I hired a professional to come out to our house to take family photos after Junah was born. Now we have documentation that I actually exist. Ha!

That is a good point, about the person behind the camera missing from photos. Keith is usually the picture-taker, so particularly on our upcoming vacation I'll have to remember to occasionally take the camera and get some pictures of him with Eleanor.

We take Archer and Will to a professional and also take lots of candids at home. I set up a white sheet over the living room wall and couch and then let the boys pose and play with I take pictures. With the natural light from the big windows, it works out great! And this way we have the original digital photos so we can mess around with them and don't have to pay out the wazoo for a CD from the professional.
