Lubbers Bracketology

Now that March Madness is upon us, Keith laid down the rules the other night. He sat down on the couch where I was sitting, and turned to me.

"You're not allowed to fill out different NCAA brackets," he said. Very matter-of-fact, but it was still a pronouncement, not to be messed with.

"I mean, you can enter as many pools as you want to," he clarified, "but once you pick your teams, you have to use the same picks for all the pools you enter."

Apparently, this is something he'd been considering for a while. And he decided that it's somewhat immoral and wishy-washy to pick different teams in different pools. If you make a pick, you make a pick and that's the end of it.

I was actually kinda glad he'd made this ruling. Since I have a hard enough time picking winners once, I'm perfectly happy to only do it once. And I can see his point about having the guts to make one choice and stick to it.

Now just keep your fingers crossed for Niagara!

First, Go Tarheels!

Second, I will outline the bracket system that gets me laughed at. If you are not picking UNC, (or Kent State when it's an option), then you always go with the color/mascot/HOT system. Check it. Are the team's colors too girly compared to the opponent? Which mascot can kick the other mascot's ass? Which team has hotter players?

This system is not fool proof, as seen in the Superbowl. I had Chicago to win: 1. Brian Urlacher is HOTT. 2. Team colors more masculine. 3. A bear can kick a colt's ass any day.

-This year I decided to go w/ an experimental system I fondly refer to as "Who's Closer To The End Of The ALphabet Unless They Have A Cooler Name And Then I Pick Them Anyway." Except Gonzaga. Gonzaga done me WRONG. Frankly, I don't know enough to use the color/mascot/HOT system...but it sure sounds scientific and I'm positive that will get you good, sound, results, Cat!

What happened to Niagara?!?! Hope you didn't take a big loss on that one. ;)

I didn't really pick Niagara. Sometimes I think about picking a bracket of all upsets, but I'm too competitive to actually do that.

Of course, where has being competitive gotten me? At the back of the pack. All of my Elite 8 picks are still alive, so I guess there's some hope.

Cat, how'd your color/mascot/HOT system go?

Amy, did the end of the alphabet work out for you?

I think I need to find a new system for next year.

So far, all of my sentimental faves are still in it: UNC, Georgetown, UNLV, and OSU. Duke was eliminated already, but I'm still going pretty strong. I chose these teams because traditionally they have had good teams. I only used the system early on in the bracket where two teams I didn't care about were playing. I think the mascot ones did ok.

As noted earlier, my system doesn't always work. See: Superbowl XLI.
